About

Wacomet Water Co. (Wacomet) is interested in developing and commercializing water desalination solutions. Desalination technologies available today suffer from many challenges, such as the cost and energy consumption of evaporative techniques or the concentrated brine waste disposal of reverse osmosis. Therefore, there is an ongoing effort in the research community to develop more energy-efficient processes. One potential solution is based on a patent application submitted by a joint effort between the Korea University Research and Business Foundation and the Research Triangle Institute: Desalting apparatus using solvent and the method thereof (WO2020075945A1, KR102064089B, US20210230020A1). It should be noted that this patent is not yet granted. The technology disclosed in the patent references a solvent extraction technique for desalination that uses an amine-based solvent with thermally responsive water solubility to extract pure water from a salt brine. Wacomet is interested in having Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) conduct an independent study of the viability of this technology for commercial scale-up in the form of a techno-economic analysis.

Timeline

Task I

The objective is to perform a high-level evaluation and Techno-economic assessment (TEA) of the viability of using temperature swing solvent extraction (TSSE) to achieve zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) desalination (December 15th 2022 - complete)

Task II

The task is pilot validation by conducting single-pass solvent-brine extraction testing, as well as a design phase to generate a P&ID for a 1-gpm pilot plant deployable as a demonstration (March 2023).

Task III

A cost estimate and equipment list to construct the designed system will be provided in the final report (April 2023).
